Fan Creation Policy
We're so happy to see that Ultimate Chicken Horse has inspired so many community members to make things of their own!
However, there's been some confusion as to what is and isn't allowed in terms of our End-User License Agreement (EULA). So we're here to clarify how you can safely make content based off our IP.
General guidelines:
Free: Content should be available to others for free. This means that:
Cannot charge for downloads, surveys, subscriptions, etc.
Cannot sell merchandise using our IP.
Follow our Community Rules.
Do not claim it's official: It must be obvious that your content is not officially in the game or endorsed by Clever Endeavour Games. If asked for clarification by others, you must be clear that it is a fan-made piece of content.
Don't steal from others: While you may trace our characters, levels, or backgrounds for fan art, video thumbnails or for use in your stream, you are not permitted to share works that copy or trace another community member's piece without their explicitly expressed consent.
Safe sponsorship: While you are free to take sponsors for your content (Twitch streams, YouTube videos, etc.), they must abide by our Community Rules by not being inappropriate, offensive, or harmful to Clever Endeavour Games. You also must be clear that the sponsor is not associated with Clever Endeavour Games or Ultimate Chicken Horse.
Don't promote editing game files: Since Ultimate Chicken Horse has online multiplayer components and it's not always clear what will affect the experience of other players, we ask community members not to edit game files in any capacity. Modifications that directly affect other game player's experiences will result in a ban from online play. Modified games will also not be eligible for support from Clever Endeavour Games.
Follow your local laws: Your content must abide by the laws in your region.
Even if your content follows these guidelines, we reserve the right to stop or restrict your use of the Ultimate Chicken Horse IP for any reason whatsoever. If there is a conflict between this page and the EULA, the EULA takes priority and overrides this document.
If you have questions about whether your content can be shared, please feel free to read the FAQ below or email us with a description of what you want to do to community@clevendeav.com and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Can I livestream playing the game on platforms like Twitch, YouTube, Facebook, etc.?
Absolutely! We love seeing people play the game. You may also monetize your streams through the usual livestreaming means (subscriptions, ad revenue, bits, donations, sponsorships) as long as it follows our general guidelines. If you own the Ultimate Chicken Horse original soundtrack electronically or physically, you have permission to play it in the background of your streams without the need for a license or written agreement. If we see someone abusing this privilege, using the audio in a way that does not abide by our rules set out here or out community rules, or any other reason, we will reach out to ask you to stop using it. You don't need to worry about DMCA claims on your content if you play Ultimate Chicken Horse or its soundtrack on stream.
Q. Can I make video content of the game on platforms like YouTube?
Yup! Feel free to monetize it based on YouTube's (or equivalent's) guidelines. The same soundtrack policies as livestreaming apply to your videos. (See above)
Q. What can I use your in-game assets for?
Visual assets: If you trace screenshots of our characters, objects, or backgrounds you may share them on social media platforms as long as it is explicitly stated or implied that it's not officially in the game. For example: a recolouring of sheep with text that says "a concept idea for Sheep from Ultimate Chicken Horse!" or photoshopping a hat onto Horse with text that says "I'd love to see this accessory on Horse someday!". These creations must also abide by our general guidelines written above.
Music: If you own the soundtrack you may use the music in your streams or video content. You may use samples of tracks to make remixes as long as you credit the source and it follows our other policies.
Coding: You may not use our entirety or parts of our code to make mods or your own games.
Q. If I create my own assets (images, sounds) based on Ultimate Chicken Horse, what can I use those for?
If you make your own art based on our characters or levels, you're free to share these online as long as it follows the rest of our general guidelines. You may do music covers of our songs as long as it follows the general guidelines and it credits the original pieces.
Q. Can I create game mods or re-skins?
As per the general guidelines, these are not permitted as it is editing game files and the game does not officially support modding. Any modifiers that affect other's gameplay will result in a ban from online multiplayer. Feel free to share concept skins though!
Q. Can I make Ultimate Chicken Horse inspired content in other games?
You may put Ultimate Chicken Horse-inspired items into other games as long as the game supports such features and it is made obvious that it is not an official Clever Endeavour Games or Ultimate Chicken Horse collaboration. With that said, you may not take direct assets from our game and put them into a game. An example of what would be allowed could be making a 2D art piece that resembles Horse in Minecraft and sharing an image of that online with the words "I made some Ultimate Chicken Horse art in Minecraft!". An example that wouldn't be permitted would be taking the image file of Horse and uploading it as a character for Don't Starve.*
*These are just examples, we are not affiliated with Mojang or Klei.
Q. Can I sell fan content at conventions or online?
You may not use our own assets (including but not limited to: character art, backgrounds, music, and logos) to sell items in any form. If you are planning on making a small run or individually selling items with your own artwork which is based on the Ultimate Chicken Horse IP, please send us an email describing what your plans are to community@clevendeav.com for possible exception.
Q. I'm creating a thing and I don't know if it meets these requirements, what should I do?
Feel free to reach out to us at community@clevendeav.com and we'll be happy to review and let you know if it follows our guidelines!
